Chilika Lake is haven for bird-watchers! With over 300,000 birds, mainly waterfowl, flocking to these wetlands in winter, this is a must visit place for all birding enthusiasts. The boat ride through the marshes was our favorite part- these are guided tours and visitors are taken along hand-picked routes to watch migratory birds, and get an insight into their migratory patterns and breeding cycles. We also picked up a number of skills at making local crafts like pottery and fishnets.
Located on the banks of the Chilika Lake, Mangalajodi is a small fishing village. Poachers were rampant once, but years of persuasion have turned them into protectors. Now, they actively patrol and protect birds in the marshes. Protection has not only led to more birds coming to these wetlands, but has also benefited the rich biodiversity that includes fishes, snakes, monitor lizards and rare fishing cats. It has been designated as an "Important Bird Area" by BirdLife International. In the peak season of November-December, Mangalajodi hosts over 300,000 birds.
